What is the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)?
The General Data Protection Regulation is a new legal framework approved by the European Union (EU) to strengthen and unify data protection of personal information. GDPR will replace the current data protection directive (in Sweden Personuppgiftslagen, PUL) and applies from 25 May 2018. The regulation has global reach and applies to all companies worldwide that process personal data of European Union citizens.
First steps towards GDPR compliance
1. Create awareness and allocate resources
The first step is making sure that your organisation is aware of the new legislation and what it means for you. How will your business be affected by GDPR? You need to allocate resources and make sure you involve decision-makers and stakeholders. Last but not least, start today!
2. Content Inventory
The Swedish Data Protection Authority recommend Content Inventory as the second step towards GDPR compliance. Content Inventory means to discover and classify your personal identifiable data. Where is it stored, how is it collected and what are you allowed to do with it?
